DAY 218: Zephaniah 1–3
During the reign of Josiah, Zephaniah announces a terrifying warning: the day of the Lord is approaching, and neither Judah's religious heritage nor her outward reforms can conceal the corruption remaining within. God will search Jerusalem with lamps, exposing idolatry, divided loyalties, injustice, and the complacency of those who live as though He neither sees nor acts. Wealth cannot purchase safety, political power cannot prevent judgment, and even mighty Nineveh will be reduced to ruins. Yet Zephaniah's message does not end in destruction. The Lord calls His people to seek righteousness and humility, promising to preserve a remnant who takes refuge in His name. He will purify the peoples, gather worshipers from the nations, remove proud boasters, restore the outcasts, and dwell among His people. Then comes one of Scripture's most astonishing pictures of grace: the God who judges wickedness rejoices over His redeemed people with singing! Ultimately, Zephaniah points us to Jesus Christ, who bears judgment for sinners, gathers the humble into His kingdom, and dwells among His people by the Holy Spirit. Through His death and resurrection, condemnation is removed, enemies are reconciled, and people from every nation are brought into the household of God. The day of the Lord is terrifying for the unrepentant, but for those sheltered in Christ, it promises everlasting joy. The God who searches Jerusalem with judgment is the same God who sings over His redeemed with love.
