DAY 216: Nahum 1–3
Yesterday we saw God extend astonishing mercy to the humbled King Manasseh. Today Nahum reveals the other side of that same holy character: the Lord who forgives repentant sinners will not tolerate unrepentant wickedness forever. Nineveh once repented under Jonah’s preaching, but Assyria has returned to its cruelty, violence, exploitation, and bloodshed. Now the prophet announces that the world's most terrifying empire is about to fall. Nahum describes the Lord as slow to anger and great in power, a refuge for those who trust Him and an avenger against those who persist in evil. Assyria's armies may appear unstoppable, but one declaration from heaven outweighs every chariot in Nineveh: “I am against you.” The city of blood will be destroyed, its treasures plundered, and the nations it terrorized will rejoice at its downfall. Yet this judgment is also good news because God's justice means evil will not reign forever. Ultimately, Nahum points us to Jesus Christ, where divine justice and mercy meet. At the cross, Christ bears the judgment His people deserve, becoming their refuge without compromising God's righteousness. Through His resurrection, He triumphs over sin, death, and the devil, and His kingdom advances toward the final defeat of every enemy. Nineveh falls, earthly empires crumble, but Christ reigns forever. Mercy calls sinners to repentance, and justice guarantees that wickedness will never have the final word.
